Next, their broad and narrow scope will be distinguished. In this, the ten unwholesome karmas are contrasted with the three wrong [actions] and the seven unwholesome restraints to clarify their broad and narrow scope. Among these three headings, the three kinds of wrong conduct—physical, verbal, and mental—are categorically broad, because they possess four meanings. What are the four meanings? (1) They encompass physical, verbal, and mental [actions]; (2) they apply to both the fundamental and the preliminary; (3) they apply to both the minor and the severe; (4) they apply to both manifest and unmanifest [karma]. Because they possess these four meanings, they are the broadest. The ten unwholesome karmas and the seven restraints are mutually broad and narrow in comparison: the ten unwholesome karmas are broad in three respects and narrow in one. Regarding the three broad respects: (1) they apply to the three karmas; (2) they apply to both the minor and the severe; (3) they apply to both manifest and unmanifest [karma]. Regarding the one narrow respect: they reside only in the fundamental, and do not apply to the preliminary. The seven unwholesome restraints are narrow in three respects and broad in one. Regarding the three narrow respects: they can be known by reversing the preceding. Regarding the one broad respect: they apply to both the fundamental and the preliminary. "Fundamental" refers to slaughtering and the like; "preliminary" refers to raising [animals for slaughter] and the like (this concludes the fourth section).
