Next, discriminating in terms of the conditioned (saṃskṛta) and unconditioned (asaṃskṛta). In Hīnayāna, the former seventeen are exclusively conditioned. The dharmadhātu comprehensively spans both the conditioned and unconditioned: material dharmas, mental dharmas, and dharmas neither material nor mental are conditioned; space, cessation through deliberation (pratisaṃkhyā-nirodha), and cessation not through deliberation (apratisaṃkhyā-nirodha) are unconditioned. In Mahāyāna, the true faculties and consciousnesses of buddhas and bodhisattvas are intrinsically unconditioned in substance, while their functions manifest as conditioned. Among the six objects, the three unconditioned dharmas are exclusively unconditioned; as for all the rest, those spoken of in terms of the true retribution of buddhas and bodhisattvas are unconditioned, while the others are conditioned (here ends this sixth section).
