8.86

言居止者，三界眾生所居住處名為居止。止處不同，分為四十：於中欲界有二十處，八大地獄即以為八；畜生、餓鬼復以為二，通前為十；四天下人并六欲天，復以為十，通前二十。色界地中有其十六：初禪有二，謂梵身天及梵輔天。初禪地中有大梵王，何故不說？與梵輔天同在一處，故不別論。二禪有三，謂少光天、無量光天及光音天，通前為五。三禪有三，謂少淨天、無量淨天及遍淨天，通前為八。四禪地中當分為三，所謂福愛、福生、廣果，通前十一。及五那含，通前十六。無想與彼廣果一處，故不別說。以此十六，通前合為三十六處。無色四天，通前四十。若就色界，別分大梵及無想天，是則居止有四十二。居止如是。

Regarding "abodes", the dwelling places inhabited by sentient beings of the three realms are called abodes. Their dwelling places differ and are divided into forty: among them, there are twenty places in the desire realm—the eight great hells constitute eight; animals and hungry ghosts again constitute two, making ten when combined with the preceding; humans of the four continents together with the six desire heavens again constitute ten, making twenty when combined with the preceding. In the stage of the form realm there are sixteen: the first dhyāna has two, namely the Heaven of Brahmā's Retinue and the Heaven of Brahmā's Ministers. In the stage of the first dhyāna there is the Great Brahmā King; why is he not mentioned? Because he resides in the same place as the Heaven of Brahmā's Ministers, he is not discussed separately. The second dhyāna has three, namely the Heaven of Minor Light, the Heaven of Immeasurable Light, and the Heaven of Light-Sound, making five when combined with the preceding. The third dhyāna has three, namely the Heaven of Minor Purity, the Heaven of Immeasurable Purity, and the Heaven of Universal Purity, making eight when combined with the preceding. In the stage of the fourth dhyāna there are properly divided three, namely Merit-Loving, Merit-Arising, and Vast Fruit, making eleven when combined with the preceding; and the five anāgāmin [heavens], making sixteen when combined with the preceding. Non-conception is in the same place as Vast Fruit, so it is not mentioned separately. With these sixteen, combined with the preceding, there are thirty-six places altogether. The four formless heavens, combined with the preceding, make forty. If, with respect to the form realm, the Great Brahmā and Non-conception heavens are distinguished separately, then there are forty-two abodes. Such are the abodes.
