The meaning of severing fetters is distinguished into nine gates: (1. Explaining the names and discerning the marks; 2. Distinctions among paths of remedy; 3. General and specific conditioned objects; 4. Gradual and sudden; 5. Nominal and real; 6. The meaning of the quantity, higher and lower, of grades; 7. Relying on dhyāna stages; 8. Distinguishing in terms of stages; 9. Distinguishing in terms of consciousness).
