Next, discussion in terms of persons. Discussing it generally, it is attained solely by the worthy and noble ones of the three vehicles. Discussing it specifically, among the Hīnayāna persons, only anāgāmins and arhats attain it. Regarding those anāgāmins and arhats, the treatises explain differently: in the Mahāvibhāṣā, ten persons attain it, meaning that within the nine grades of defilement in the stage of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, from severing one grade up to nine grades constitutes nine persons, and being fully bound in the stage of neither-perception-nor-non-perception constitutes one, making ten persons. Among these ten persons, from the fully bound up through having severed eight grades of defilement, they are anāgāmins; having severed the ninth grade, one is an arhat. In the Tattvasiddhi system, there is no one who is fully bound in neither-perception-nor-non-perception that can attain it; they must have severed a portion before they are said to attain it. How many grades must be severed in that portion? The treatise does not distinguish. Someone explained: within the nine grades of defilement in the stage of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, having severed the first eight grades with only one grade remaining, weary of the toil and deliberation of the mind, one enters the cessation attainment—perhaps it is like this. Or, severing one, two, three, or four grades, one can also extinguish the mind; before the severing is complete one is an anāgāmin, and when complete one is an arhat. In the Mahāyāna system, all those from the lineage (gotra) stage and above attain it. If discussed broadly, those from the ten faiths and above also gradually attain it (this concludes the seventh section).
