Next, the four stages are distinguished in terms of understanding and practice. Within this there are two [approaches]: first, discussing understanding and practice correlatively; second, stating understanding and practice together. As for discussing them correlatively: these four stages are divided into two pairs; the first two form one pair with understanding first and practice second, and the latter two form one pair with understanding first and practice second. What are their characteristics? In the stage of the lineage of habituation, doctrinal understanding is perfected; thus the Huayan jing says: 'Bodhisattvas of the ten abidings, in accordance with the Dharma they hear, immediately open up understanding on their own without relying on awakening through others.' In the stage of the natural lineage, one undertakes practices in accordance with the teaching; therefore the Huayan jing speaks of them as the ten practices. Such is the first pair. In the second pair, first, in the abiding of understanding-and-practice, one cultivates understanding of principle; therefore the sūtra speaks of it as 'understanding-and-practice' because understanding serves as practice. Furthermore, the Di jing states that this understanding-and-practice is clear contemplation; contemplation is equivalent to understanding. From the first ground onward, practice of principle is perfected; therefore the treatise names it 'upholding the skilful means of practice'. Discussing it on this basis: in the lineage of habituation and understanding-and-practice, understanding and contemplation are perfected; in the natural lineage and the ten grounds, active virtues are perfected. As for stating them together: among the four kinds—hearing, thinking, cultivating, and realizing—hearing and thinking are understanding, while cultivating and realizing are practice. In the stage of the lineage of habituation, relying on the teaching generates understanding, perfecting the wisdom born of hearing. In the stage of the natural lineage, relying on the meaning generates understanding, perfecting the wisdom born of thinking. In the stage of understanding-and-practice, relying on the teaching initiates practice, perfecting the wisdom born of cultivation. From the first ground onward, relying on principle perfects practice, perfecting true realization. Such is the distinction made in correlating understanding and practice. The above four sections together constitute the second [part], distinguishing with respect to stages.
