Next, the fourth section: distinguishing the differences according to time. When these two kinds of natures are at the stage of the external ordinary person, they are only called Buddha-nature, and not called practice-virtue. Buddha-nature has two kinds: first, the Dharma Buddha-nature; second, the reward Buddha-nature. The Dharma Buddha-nature is the cause of the nature-disposition, and the reward Buddha-nature is the cause of the acquired disposition. What is the difference between the two natures? As for the Dharma Buddha-nature, its substance of dharmas is originally possessed, having no increase or decrease compared with its substance at the time of the fruit, differing only in being concealed or revealed, impure or pure. As for the reward Buddha-nature, it originally lacks a substance of dharmas, having only the sense that it can be produced through skillful means. These two have been distinguished and elaborated in detail previously in the chapter on Buddha-nature. When these two Buddha-natures reach the nature stage, they are called the two dispositions. The nature of the Dharma Buddha is transformed and named the nature-disposition; the practice-virtues produced by the nature of the reward Buddha are called the acquired disposition. When these two dispositions reach the stage of understanding and practice, they are called obtaining skillful means and the pure orientation. That acquired disposition, when reaching understanding and practice, is called obtaining skillful means. That nature-disposition, when reaching understanding and practice, is called the pure orientation. When those [two], obtaining skillful means and the pure orientation, reach the first bhūmi, they are transformed and named the two paths: obtaining skillful means is transformed and named the teaching path, and the pure orientation is transformed and named the realization path. When the teaching path reaches the fruit, it is transformed and named the reward Buddha, skillful means bodhi, and skillful means nirvāṇa. When the realization path reaches the fruit, it is transformed and named the Dharma Buddha, naturally pure bodhi, and naturally pure nirvāṇa. Although these change in accordance with time, their meaning is not different. The two dispositions have thus been roughly explained.
