Next, explaining the principle of awakening to teaching and generating cognition. This meaning is difficult to comprehend; how is cognition generated? The Great Master's old saying states: 'Receiving the teaching, one attains awakening and generates the two cognitions; the teaching shifts to be named the object. If one does not awaken, cognition is not generated. Regarding not awakening: hearing of existence, one forms an understanding of existence; existence then abides in existence, and existence does not express non-existence. Hearing of non-existence, one forms an understanding of non-existence; non-existence then abides in non-existence, and non-existence does not express non-non-existence. This is called not awakening. Regarding awakening: hearing of existence, one does not abide in existence, and existence expresses non-existence; hearing of non-existence, one does not abide in non-existence, and non-existence expresses non-non-existence. This is called awakening. In what manner does one awaken? Does one awaken to non-existence and non-non-existence as non-dual, or does one awaken to existence and non-existence as dual? If, due to the duality of existence and non-existence, one awakens to the non-duality of neither existence nor non-existence, non-dual cognition should be generated; how could two cognitions be generated? If one says that one awakens to the duality of existence and non-existence, this is awakening to the teaching, not awakening to the principle. Since one does not awaken to the principle, how can it be called awakening? Advance and retreat are both difficult to clarify, and have not yet been resolved,' etc.
