Explaining names has four propositions altogether: first, one name with one meaning; second, one name with immeasurable meanings; third, one meaning with one name; fourth, one meaning with immeasurable names. Names do not exceed these two kinds; meanings do not go beyond these two items. As for "one name with one meaning": one name is just one conventional name and one ultimate name; one meaning is conventional taking insubstantiality as its meaning, and ultimate taking reality as its meaning. Heretofore, only this one proposition has been grasped; now it is clarified as just one proposition among the four propositions. Next, as for "one name with immeasurable meanings": how is there one name with immeasurable meanings? Explanation: The one is the immeasurable one; how could the one not be immeasurable? This is the immeasurable as one, and the one as immeasurable. Therefore, the sūtra says: "In the one, one understands the immeasurable; in the immeasurable, one understands the one." If one produces it in turn, it is not genuine cognition; [if one understands this, one is] without fear.
