Question: In the other position, the two truths having a single substance cannot be simultaneous; now your illuminating existence being illuminating non-existence is also a single substance—how can they be simultaneous? Answer: The other position has obstructions. If existence is emptiness, one loses existence; if emptiness is existence, one loses emptiness. Therefore, they cannot be simultaneous. Here, merely existence is emptiness, and emptiness is existence. Existence being emptiness, emptiness does not destroy existence; emptiness being existence, existence does not disturb emptiness. Therefore, they can be simultaneous. Second is the horizontal-vertical simultaneity of duality and non-duality. Duality is non-duality; non-duality is duality. Duality itself is just non-duality; non-duality itself is just duality. There is no duality distinct from non-duality, and no non-duality distinct from duality. Therefore, without destroying provisional designations, one expounds the real mark of all dharmas; without disturbing equal awakening, one establishes all dharmas. If duality were distinct from non-duality, one would destroy provisional designations to expound the real mark. Without destroying provisional designations one expounds the real mark; therefore duality is just non-duality. This is why duality and non-duality are horizontally and vertically simultaneous.
