I reply: Arising and ceasing belong to a mind that arises and ceases. The sage has no mind; whence could arising and ceasing arise? Yet it is not that he has no mind: it is simply that his mind is a mindless mind. Nor is it that he does not respond: it is simply that his response is a non-responding response. Therefore, the sage’s way of responding and converging is as dependable as the substance of the four seasons. Simply taking emptiness and non-being as its essence, this cannot be made to arise, nor can it be made to cease.
