The Named One said: "Your treatise itself says: 'Nirvāṇa neither transcends being and non-being, nor does it abide in being and non-being.' If it does not abide in being and non-being, it cannot be found within being and non-being; if it does not transcend being and non-being, it cannot be sought apart from being and non-being. If there is nowhere to seek it, it must be entirely non-existent. Yet again, its path is not non-existent. Since its path is not non-existent, the profound journey can be pursued; this is why the thousand sages followed the same rut and never returned in vain. Since its path already exists, and yet you say it neither transcends nor abides, there must be an extraordinary purport. May I hear it?"
