Sixth, proclaiming and clarifying the intention of the preface. 'Lingered' means not parting. 'Lecture hall' means the lecture seats. The Shuowen says: 'Jiang means to practice.' The Zuozhuan says: 'Jiang means to plan.' The Zhouli says: 'The director of the market always identifies goods by displaying them in stalls.' This means that displaying products constitutes a stall (si). Here it means that in places of lecturing and explaining, tables and seats are set out, an arrangement like a market stall. 'It has been twenty years since lecturing began'; it can also mean twenty years since beginning to listen to lectures. 'Having frequently encountered stacked mats, only at the end did I behold this treatise': He also frequently encountered stacked mats, and only at the very end came to see this treatise. 'Stacked mats' refers to the Han emperor ordering the scholars to lecture and debate; the victor would take away the mat of the inferior. Dai Ping sat alone upon fifty stacked mats; the people of that time said: 'Explaining the classics without exhaustion is Dai, the Palace Attendant.' 'I merely deposit a preface, entrusting my awakening therein': Entrusting the awakened mind within the preface. 'Those who agree with me and those who are worthier than I, please await future sages': 'Si' means to wait. Those who agree with me and those who are worthier than I are to await future bright sages.
