"Doctrine" (zong) means ancestral source; "fundamental" (ben) names the root. Master Sengzhao takes original non-being, the dharmatā, and so on to be the fundamental doctrine of the various sūtras and treatises. Now, in clarifying this meaning, he therefore speaks of the "Meaning of the Fundamental Doctrine" (Zongben yi). Alternatively, one may take this brief text as the fundamental doctrine of the four treatises below; hence he says "Meaning of the Fundamental Doctrine". We now follow the latter explanation. This text has two divisions: the single text of the "Fundamental Doctrine" is termed the "setting forth of the doctrine"; the four treatises from "[Things Do] Not Shift" onward are termed the "clarification of the teaching".
