Fourth, explaining the lineage of the cessation-truth of nirvāṇa, which serves as the fundamental doctrinal basis for the Treatise on Nirvāṇa Being Nameless (Niepan wuming lun). The truth of exhaustion (jindi) is precisely the truth of cessation (nirodha-satya); among the four noble truths, nirvāṇa is the third truth. The twenty-third fascicle of the Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'Good son! The essence of nirvāṇa has no resting place; it is truly the place where all Buddhas sever afflictions, and is therefore called nirvāṇa.' Now this statement is taken to clarify the fundamental doctrine of nirvāṇa. As for 'there is not further a separate place of exhaustion': exhaustion originally exhausts the fetters; when the fetters are exhausted, there is no separate exhaustion. Such having no separate exhaustion is called the great nirvāṇa of permanence, bliss, self, and purity.
