Third, clarifying the intention of composing the treatise. To use the name of a thing to name an existent thing, hence it says "to treat things as things in things." To use the name of a thing to name what is not a thing, hence it says "to treat things as things in non-things." If one uses the name of a thing to name an existent thing, then there is an entity of a thing that can be named; hence it says "then what is treated as a thing can be treated as a thing." If one uses the name of a thing to name what is not a thing, then there is no entity of a thing that can be named; hence it says "though it is treated as a thing, it is not a thing." "Therefore, things do not coincide with names to achieve reality": the entity of a thing is distinct in itself; it does not take the name to be the reality of the thing. "Names do not coincide with things to tread upon the true": names are also distinct; they do not take the entity of the thing to be the truth of the name. "However, the ultimate truth rests in solitary stillness beyond nameable teachings…" below: as for things of the conventional truth, names still do not coincide with reality, and reality does not coincide with names; how much more so for the principle of the ultimate truth, which is beyond the reach of nameable teachings, hence it says "rests in solitary stillness beyond nameable teachings." Since it is not reached by nameable teachings, how could written words express the ultimate truth? "Unable to remain completely silent, I temporarily set forth words to approximate it": "shut" (杜) means block. As for "set forth" (厝), the Xiaoya says: "cuo (措) means place." Now written with the character cuo (厝), the meaning is also the same. Although the principle cannot be spoken, one tries by means of words to express the principle.
