Second, explaining the intention of the treatise. The preceding two pairs are each contradictory to one another; such contradiction is not in vain. When investigating the intention of these words, they simply clarify the Middle Way of neither existence nor non-existence. 'This is one principle with two designations, whose wording appears to be different': it is merely one thing, yet speaking of neither existence nor non-existence is why it is called 'two designations'. The statement of non-existence appears different from non-non-existence, and the statement of non-non-existence appears different from non-existence, hence it is said to be 'different'. 'If one comprehends that in which they are identical, there is no difference that is not identical': *gou* means 'if only'. 'That in which they are identical' refers to the Middle Way. The statements of neither existence nor non-existence both clarify the Middle Way; since the Middle Way is identical, there is nothing that is not identical.
