1.16

"The king and lady were afraid, and bowing with joined hands, asked: 'Is there an ill omen? Please explain your meaning.' He raised his hand and answered, saying: 'It is auspicious and entirely without disadvantage! I venture to congratulate the Great King on obtaining the birth of this divine man. The great shaking of heaven and earth yesterday evening was precisely because of this. My physiognomical method says: "When a monarch begets a son who possesses the thirty-two marks of a great man, if he remains in the realm, he will be a cakravartin ruling over the four quarters of the world, to whom the seven treasures come of themselves; whenever he journeys, he can fly; arms and weapons are not employed, and peace prevails naturally. If he finds no joy in the world, and abandons his household to pursue the Way, he will become a spontaneous Buddha who delivers the myriad folk." I lament that my years are already late and declining, and that I must soon enter the next life, unable to witness the emergence of the Buddha or hear his sūtras; therefore I grieve for myself.'"
