"He entreated her again, saying: 'Sister, you can go and seek more.' He offered two hundred, then three hundred, but she would not consent. Thereupon he reached into his bag, took out all five hundred silver coins, and gave them all to her. Gopikā reflected that the flowers were worth at most a few coins, yet he offered five hundred; coveting his silver treasure, she gave him five stalks of flowers and kept two for herself. As they turned to part, her mind grew suspicious: 'What kind of practitioner of the Way is this, dressed in deerskin garments that barely cover his form, who does not begrudge his silver coins and treasure to obtain five stalks of flowers?' Delighted beyond measure, she chased after him and called out: 'Man! Tell me the truth, and you may keep these flowers; if not, I will take them back from you.' The bodhisattva looked back and said: 'Buying the flowers began from one hundred coins up to five hundred, and we settled the transaction ourselves; why should you seize them?' The woman said: 'I am of the royal house; I have the power to seize them from you.' The bodhisattva said sheepishly: 'I wish to offer them up to the Buddha, merely seeking my vow.'
