"The Buddha remained in meditative absorption for seven days, unmoved and unwavering. The tree spirit thought, 'The Buddha has newly attained the Path and has sat comfortably for seven days, yet no one has offered him food. I should find someone to feed the Buddha.' Just then, five hundred merchants happened to pass by the side of the mountain; their carts and oxen stumbled and could not proceed. Among them were two leaders, one named Trapuṣa and the second named Bhallika. Frightened, they returned with the group to pray for blessings at the tree spirit. The spirit manifested a radiant form and said, 'In this world there is now a Buddha, here within the borders of the kingdom of Uruvilvā by the Nairañjanā River, and no one has offered him food yet. If you are fortunate enough to be the first to have good intention, you will surely obtain great merit.' Hearing the name of the Buddha, the merchants all rejoiced and said, 'The Buddha must be uniquely great and venerable, revered by the devas and spirits, no ordinary being.' They immediately mixed roasted barley flour with honey, went together beneath the tree, and bowed their heads to offer it to the Buddha.
