"Kāśyapa's five hundred disciples each tended three fires, making fifteen hundred fires in all. The next morning, when they went to kindle them, the fires would not light at all. Bewildered, they reported this to their master. Their master said: 'I suspect this was done by that great śramaṇa.' He immediately went and asked the Buddha: 'My five hundred disciples tend fifteen hundred fires in all, yet when they kindled them this morning, none of the fires would light. Was this done by the Great Man of the Way?' The Buddha said: 'Do you wish for the fires to burn, or not?' He asked him this three times. [Kāśyapa] replied: 'I wish for them to burn.' The Buddha said: 'You may go; the fires will burn.' At his words, they all burst into flame. Kāśyapa thought again: 'This great śramaṇa is certainly spiritual, yet he has not attained the Way, and is not equal to me, who have already attained the status of an arhat!'
