"Regarding the four grounds of self-confidence: The Buddha's divine wisdom is perfectly enlightened, and there is nothing he does not know; when the foolish and deluded say among themselves, 'The Buddha does not yet know everything,' even Brahmā and all the holy ones cannot dispute the Buddha's wisdom, and therefore he walks alone without fear—this is the first ground of self-confidence. The Buddha's defilements are already exhausted and he fully knows it; when the foolish and deluded say among themselves, 'The Buddha's defilements are not yet exhausted,' even Brahmā and all the holy ones cannot dispute the Buddha's resolve, and therefore he walks alone without fear—this is the second ground of self-confidence. The Buddha proclaims the sūtras and precepts for the world to recite and practice; when the foolish and deluded say among themselves, 'The Buddha's sūtras can be suppressed,' even Brahmā and all the holy ones cannot criticize or damage the Buddha's correct sūtras, and therefore he walks alone without fear—this is the third ground of self-confidence. The Buddha reveals the meaning of the Path, his words true and essential, able to deliver [beings] from suffering and distress; when the foolish and deluded say among themselves, 'The Buddha cannot deliver from suffering,' even Brahmā and all the holy ones cannot dispute the Buddha's correct Path, and therefore he walks everywhere without fear—this is the fourth ground of self-confidence.
