This directly adduces false imputation. Since mutually pointing to "this" and "that" has no fixed location, how is it that the deluded take it as certain, grasping oneself as definitely named "this" and the other as definitely named "that", with the mind of false conceptualization grasping and clinging just the same? From "Thus" onward: names and characteristics are originally empty, but deluded people falsely grasp them. It can also mean that names and characteristics are non-existent, yet temporarily begin to exist; false conceptualization is non-existent, yet temporarily begins to be absent. With the deluded sentiment of what is non-existent and temporarily begins to be absent, they grasp the names and characteristics that are non-existent and temporarily begin to exist—like flowers [seen by] diseased eyes, or the cicada buzz in diseased ears; the cicadas and flowers are constantly non-existent, while the roots of the disease are constantly grasped.
