The Chengju jing says: "These phenomena have nothing that exists; they are forcefully given names." "The Garden" is the Lacquer Garden, a place-name in Caozhou; Zhuang Zhou once served as an official there, hence he is designated by it. His "Adjustment of Controversies" says: "To use a finger to show that a finger is not a finger is not as good as using a non-finger to show that a finger is not a finger. To use a horse to show that a horse is not a horse is not as good as using a non-horse to show that a horse is not a horse." "Finger" refers to fingers on the hand. "Horse" refers to game counters, like the pieces in backgammon today. Like two people facing each other, each takes their own finger as "this finger" and the other's finger as "not a finger"; right and wrong reside in each alternately, fundamentally lacking reality. "Show" (yu) means to clarify. The horse can be understood by analogy.
