The deluded mind and deluded object mutually cause and depend upon one another, each giving birth to the other; mind and object are distinct, having the grasper and grasped of knowing. "Is not the known" means that when the object has not yet confronted the mind, it is not yet an object. "Born of knowing" means that due to the present object, the internal mind is drawn forth. This is the mind being born due to the object, and therefore the mind can know. Thus the Awakening of Faith states: "Furthermore, with external objects as conditions, the six kinds of marks are produced," which refers to the discrimination and grasping of the six coarse phenomena-consciousnesses, and this is called knowing. "Knowing also gives birth to the known" means that the object is born due to the mind. Due to the mind's discrimination, the object also arises accordingly. "Knowing" is discrimination. An ancient worthy said: "There has never been an object without mind, nor has there ever been a mind without object."
