Sage wisdom is the essence of prajñā, free from all discriminations; hence it is called "faint and subtle". Because it is animitta, it cannot be conceived through meanings and images; because it is nameless, it cannot be discussed through verbal expressions; hence it is called "difficult to fathom". "As a tentative attempt..." below means: although prajñā cannot be reached by names and marks, in wishing to awaken beings, one must inwardly forget its images and outwardly lodge it in words to debate it. Wishing to speak of the unspeakable, he therefore calls them "wild [words]". The Zhuangzi says: "He sent the Obscure and Formless (Wangxiang) to seek it, and found it." Old editions had the character "wang" 惘, which is an error. Below "how could it be said...", principle is not subject to verbal debate, yet words are merely lodged to reveal it.
