The first line refers generally to contemporaries, and also includes the questioner. The next line grasps the meaning following words, which contains especially many faults; they are not necessarily identical, so it says "mostly," etc. The word "mostly" runs through the subsequent lines. In the next two lines, "great square" and "foreknowledge" both come from Laozi, who said, "The great square has no corners," and also said, "Foreknowledge is the flower of the Way." It is like a person wishing to wander through the great square but instead seeking edges and corners, which serves as a metaphor for wishing to awaken to prajñā that is neither being nor non-being, but instead seeking it within having knowledge and lacking knowledge. "Foreknowledge" is precisely grasping through delusion. Preserving discriminative consciousness to indicate non-discriminative profound knowledge is precisely the opposite. In the last line, "what they preserve" refers to the views held in their own minds. Clinging to the views of their own minds, they determine them to be thoroughly right.
