"Mysterious inner workings" refers to true wisdom. The first clause enjoins relinquishing emotional attachments and bounded stagnations, not harboring preconceived notions so as to mark out the mystery, holding that what is upheld will certainly hit the mark. "Outside affairs" enjoins not determining the purport directly upon words, and seeking the great square rather than searching its corners. From "leveling myriad existences" downward, it means that contemplating conditions with their myriad differences, and prakṛti-śūnyatā being level and one, is non-existence; the utmost void is merely within conditions, which is non-non-existence. From "one should say" downward, it continues the preceding to elucidate non-grasping. Indeed, only when one can thus forget feelings and clarify objects may one begin to speak of the mind. As for "moving forward and backward," Master Yao says: "It means advancing and withdrawing. Upāya has many directions; how could moving forward and backward be fixed? Because of myriad existences, one adapts to transformation; due to the one voidness, one is unconditioned."
