"Heavenly luminaries" refers to the stars and colors in the heavens. "Firmament" refers to the high skies. Gong and shang are two of the five musical notes. Together they raise two metaphors, which serve as metaphors for names and marks perishing externally and being and non-being being cut off internally. The two metaphors are mutually implicative; fully stated, they mean concealing the heavenly luminaries beyond the firmament and locking up the lutes inside the hall, while yet demanding that the blind and deaf distinguish the difference between black and white among heavenly luminaries and the distinction between gong and shang in lute music. How could they possibly do so? The meaning within the Dharma is: if being and non-being are retained internally and designations are retained externally, there is still fear that one might not enter. Now if both inside and outside are cut off, how could one anchor one's mind and awaken to enter?
