大明，日也。謂若名相雙絕，不應根宜，不可謂之明杲日於暗室令見其相、奏妙音於未聞使聽其玄。皆約名相以難。

"Great radiance" refers to the sun. It means that if names and marks are both cut off and do not correspond to what is fitting for capacities, it cannot be called brightening the brilliant sun in a dark room to let them see its forms, or playing marvelous music to those who have not heard to make them listen to its profundity. All of these are objections posed on the basis of names and marks.
