Taking up the preceding meaning of the sūtra to distinguish this: earlier it stated that the Buddha is like empty space, manifesting in accord with conditions; therefore it says 'in the world.' It means his response leaves nothing unreached, being universally pervasive just as the body is. From 'silent, serene...' onward, it reveals that he is neither sound nor form. Since the physical body is not appropriated as self, both grasping forms of clinging are forever non-existent; hence he does not contend, for non-contention is nirvāṇa. From 'he guides...' onward, he guides due to evocative resonance; before an illness manifests, there is no medicine.
