Forms do not issue from the sage, and mind does not arise from the sage. Since they manifest entirely due to the stimulation of beings' capacities, what distress or what toil could there be for this body and this mind? Therefore, the Commentary on the Manifestation of the Tathāgata states: 'Forms are not possessed by me; their wax and wane depend upon the vessels of others. Mind does not arise from me; how could there be a before and after in universal manifestation?' The phrase from 'metals and stones' downward draws upon the 'Free and Easy Wandering' chapter of the Zhuangzi: 'A great drought may melt metals and stones, and scorch the earth and mountains, yet he is not hot,' and so forth.
