The root sūtra, fascicle twenty-one, states: "Briefly speaking, nirvāṇa is neither mark nor non-mark, neither thing nor non-thing," and so forth. "Without hearing and without explanation," etc., is also a text from the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa. Principle, phenomena, good, evil, and so forth are all called dharmas. Here, according with the intent of the treatise, we temporarily take being and non-being as dharmas. "Not dharma" means not abiding; "not non-dharma" means not transcending. Neither transcending nor abiding means there is no explanation; without explanation there is no hearing; without hearing there is no knowing.
