“Yet the sagely intention is abstruse and profound, its principle subtle and its words concise; it may guide those advanced thinkers and rescue lofty scholars, but I fear that those who adhere to names and titles might not fully fathom Your Majesty's intent. Hoping to emulate the composition of Confucius's Ten Wings for the *Changes*—not that I covet profuse words, but seeking to amplify and manifest this obscure purport—I have ventured to compose the *Treatise on the Namelessness of Nirvāṇa*. The treatise consists of nine refutations and ten expositions, drawing broadly from the sūtras, citing evidence, and establishing analogies, so as to respectfully expound Your Majesty's purport of the nameless. How could I claim to have attained the divine mind or exhausted the far-reaching, correct principle? I have merely modeled it upon the profound gate and expounded it to instruct students of the way.
