已見邊為近，未見邊為遠。人喻三乘，斬喻智斷，木喻種現，無喻無為。尺寸，喻三乘斷惑多少也。以喻量法，昭然可見。

What is already seen is the proximate; what is not yet seen is the remote. The "person" illustrates the three vehicles; "hewing" illustrates cutting off [delusions] by wisdom; the "timber" illustrates seeds and active manifestations; "non-existence" illustrates the unconditioned. "Feet and inches" illustrate the greater or lesser extent to which the three vehicles cut off delusions. When measured against the Dharma by this metaphor, it is clearly evident.
