初句總指。次句，識謂識心，即樂欲不同，謂樂大樂小。根謂根性，即種性不一，即大機小機。次句，大乘雙照二空名深，小乘獨見人空名淺。德行下，自利之行名薄，二行雙行名厚。亦可諦緣之行名薄，六度萬行名厚。

The first clause points generally. In the next clause, "conscious" refers to the conscious mind, which means their aspirations and desires differ—namely, aspiring to the great or aspiring to the small. "Faculties" refers to their nature and faculties, which means their spiritual lineages are not uniform—namely, great capacity and small capacity. In the next clause, for the Mahāyāna, illuminating both types of emptiness is called "deep"; for the Hīnayāna, seeing only the emptiness of persons is called "shallow." From "virtuous conduct" onwards, practice for self-benefit is called "thin"; practicing both kinds of practice is called "rich." Alternatively, the practice of the truths and conditions is called "thin," while the six perfections and myriad practices are called "rich."
