Building on the preceding Dharma and metaphor, this answers "if they are different there are also no three." The first two lines clarify with metaphor, the latter two explain in terms of the Dharma. The preceding brought up that although the three birds are distinct, their escape from affliction is identical: escaping means they are identical, which does not prevent the persons from being distinct—this clarifies that oneness also has three. This passage brings up that although fleeing affliction is identical, far and near differ—this clarifies that difference also has three, but the difference resides in far and near, not in the Dharma. "Subtle discernment" is the wisdom of the three vehicles.
