The first two metaphors both convey the meaning of the ancient translation of the Vibhāṣā-śāstra. Thus, fascicle twenty-two of that treatise states: “Just like a single target, whether of wood or iron, struck by many arrows, so it is with the single unconditioned essence traversed by the three notions,” and so forth. Fascicle fifty-five states: “Being able to reach the very bottom of the profound river of the twelve links of dependent origination is named ‘Buddha’; the two vehicles cannot do so. It is like three beasts crossing a river—namely, a hare, a horse, and an elephant: the hare crosses by leaping and bounding; the horse sometimes reaches the bottom and sometimes does not; the gandhahastin (scented elephant) at all times never fails to reach the bottom,” and so forth.
