“Dependent origination” refers to the twelve links of dependent origination. “Ford” refers to the crossing-place; once crossed, it is called ferried across. The four noble truths are easily understood. Whether conditions or truths, that any single Dharma-gate is received in common by the three types of persons is the purport of the Shared Teaching. That the Dharma-gate received is without difference, yet according with their capacities they merely accomplish the bodhi of their own vehicle, is also the purport of the Vibhāṣā. The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra briefly says: “Contemplating the twelvefold dependent origination with lesser wisdom, one attains the śrāvaka path,” and so forth. Beholding the principle of the truths is called “hitting the target”; the aspects of practice are all manifold, as explained in the Vibhāṣā. “Abandoning falsity” means severing delusions. “Approaching truth” means realizing the principle. “Together ascending to the unconditioned” clarifies that that toward which they proceed is not different. From “yet that” onward clarifies that those who proceed have distinctions. The last sentence draws from the Analects: “In archery, hitting the leather is not the principal matter, because people's strength is not of the same degree.” Comparing the Dharma to the metaphor, it is clearly evident.
