“Multitude of existing things” refers to the myriad things. “Measure” refers to boundaries and limits. Although the phenomenal phenomena of dependent origination are vastly manifold without boundary, having names and characteristics they all belong to finite limits; hence it is said that “they have limits.” “Śāriputra” is Śāriputra, because he was foremost in wisdom. “Pūrṇa” is Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra, because he was foremost in eloquence. The meaning is: regarding the limited conventional truth, even if one exhausted Pūrṇa's eloquence, he could not fully speak its names; even if one pushed Śāriputra's wisdom and contemplation to the utmost, he could not ubiquitously know its conditions. Hence the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, fascicle thirty-five, says: “Once, when I was on Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain discussing conventional truth together with Maitreya Bodhisattva, Śāriputra and the other five hundred śrāvakas were completely unable to recognize or know anything in that matter, how much less the supramundane ultimate truth.”
