《放光》第二云：「舍利弗！譬如螢火虫不作是念言：『我光明照閻浮提普令大明。』如是舍利弗！諸聲聞、辟支佛亦無是念言：『我當行六波羅蜜，具足十八法，成阿惟三佛，度脫眾生。』舍利弗！譬如日出遍照閻浮提，莫不蒙明者。如是菩薩行六波羅蜜，具足十八法，成阿惟三佛，度不可計一切眾生。」

The Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā (Light-Emitting Sūtra), fascicle two, says: “Śāriputra! It is like a firefly that does not have this thought: ‘May my light shine upon Jambudvīpa and universally make it greatly illuminated.’ In this way, Śāriputra, the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas also do not have this thought: ‘I shall practice the six pāramitās, fully possess the eighteen [unshared] dharmas, attain abhisambodhi, and deliver sentient beings.’ Śāriputra! It is like the sun rising and shining everywhere over Jambudvīpa, where none fail to receive its light. In this way the bodhisattva practices the six pāramitās, fully possesses the eighteen dharmas, attains abhisambodhi, and delivers incalculable all sentient beings.”
