South illustrates movement; north illustrates quiescence. The sūtras speak of quiescence and speak of movement, causing people to undertake practice. Since the two principles contradict each other, how can there be a standard? It is like wishing to go north yet conversely pointing south. If here one speaks of quiescence yet conversely displays movement, how can confused practitioners be made to understand? As for using south and north to illustrate movement and quiescence: south is the vermilion radiance, hence illustrating movement; north is the dark obscurity, hence illustrating quiescence.
