進退約人，先後通約人法。三乘進而證之，非先也，以無前際故。迷夫退而未證，非後也，以無後際故。
Advancing and retreating pertain to persons; ahead and behind pertain broadly to both persons and phenomena. When the three vehicles advance and realize it, they are not ahead, because there is no anterior limit. When deluded individuals retreat and do not realize it, they are not behind, because there is no posterior limit.
