One day I happened to receive your letter answering the Marquis of Ancheng, Yao Song, inquiring about the ultimate principle of the unconditioned. Why so? The reason sentient beings have long transmigrated in saṃsāra is entirely due to their attachment to desire. If desire ceases in the mind, then there is no longer saṃsāra. Saṃsāra being no more, one submerges the spirit in mysterious silence and joins its virtue with empty space; this is called nirvāṇa. Since it is called nirvāṇa, how could there further be room for names within it?
