This is the ninth of the nine refutations. "Examination" (kao) means investigation. Continuing from the preceding "attaining nirvāṇa without departing from phenomena," it accordingly examines and investigates: if the aggregates are extinguished, or if the aggregates are preserved, both contravene the teaching and contravene principle—how then should it be attained? Why is this discussed last? It means that since the preceding determinations regarding the priority of awakening versus cultivation had already fully addressed the intended meanings, ultimate realization and entry stands at the very end; hence it is examined now.
