Here there are four pairs, all with the upper line indicating the substance and the lower line differentiating the attainment. The first two pairs pertain to mind and object. "Profound Way" is the object. "Realm beyond" is outside phenomenal affairs. "Subtle wisdom" is the mind. Because neither is conventional, it therefore says "beyond things." The next two lines can be understood, merely speaking of attainment with respect to the object and speaking of knowing with respect to the mind. The latter two pairs are differentiated with respect to marks and names. The great image is not a mark; not preserving marks in order to see, only then is there true seeing; preserving marks, one does not see. The great sound is not a noise; not pursuing sounds in order to hear, only then is there universal hearing; pursuing sounds, one does not hear. For this reason, when Li Zhu ran outwardly and could not find it, it was only because it was formless; when Guanyin listened back and attained perfect penetration, it was truly due to conforming to nature. May all discerning persons not pursue forms and sounds!
