Explaining the names: First explaining the general name, then explaining the distinct names. First, the general name: The Yogācārabhūmi states: 'The first seven liberations generate resolute belief regarding that from which one is already liberated.' As for the dharmas contemplated by the seven, for the most part one must subdue or sever the defilements of the hindrance of afflictions of that stage before beginning to practice them, which is called 'already liberated'. Now, contemplating objects from which one is already liberated, to remove absorption hindrances and arouse supernormal virtues, one generates resolute belief; hence they are called liberations. As for the bodily realization, defilement of the summit of existence definitely cannot yet be abandoned, but merely by removing all absorption hindrances of that stage, one arouses virtues such as non-contention; hence it becomes a liberation. Because of this, it was said earlier that 'for the most part they are already abandoned'; otherwise, the word 'mostly' would be useless. The eighth liberation casts aside and turns away from perception and feeling; hence it is called a liberation. Although the preceding uninterrupted path extinguishes the hindrance of perception and feeling, it is only upon reaching the position of the absorption of cessation that it attains the name of liberation. Because when entering the absorption of cessation, one temporarily casts aside and turns away from the hindrance of perception and feeling, and what was sought is now fulfilled, the name liberation is established. It is not that only at that time does one initially liberate absorption hindrances, for they were already abandoned beforehand; thus it is both an untying and a liberation. 'Eight' is a number, an appositional compound containing a numeral.
