Third, explaining the superior benefits: Since atoms do not exist, what is the purpose of speaking of their existence? The fifty-fourth [fascicle states]: "There are five superior benefits: by the expedient means of establishing the analysis of matter in a single composite whole, one is then able to purely and extensively cultivate one's cognitive objects; furthermore, one can gradually sever the satkāyadṛṣṭi, sever all arrogance, subdue the entanglements of kleśa, and quickly eliminate all grasping at characteristics." The intended meaning here is: in cultivating the contemplation of the emptiness of dharmas, one must analyze all matter first down to atoms, sever all kleśas, and subsequently enter emptiness. Due to this great purpose, atoms are spoken of. By what person is that mind capable of analyzing made? By which truth is it subsumed? All these should be considered separately.
