Seventh, fearlessness: Internally having protective benefit, externally there is no terror. The dharmatā body and land, the self-enjoyment and other-enjoyment bodies, and the transformation body have long been fearless. The Buddhabhūmi-sūtra says: "Far removed from all māras." "Māras" refers to the four māras, which are the causes of fear, because all fears are generated from them. The Buddha is free of all of them, and hence has no fear. In the other-enjoyment land, the bodhisattvas of the ten grounds are free from the coarse four māras and lack the five fears. The stages of gradually severing kleśa, the aggregates, and death should be explained according to their corresponding levels, the meaning of which can be understood. In the transformation lands, the noble ones of the three vehicles can also partially be free of them. Bodhisattvas of the ten abodes who achieve bodhi through the eight aspects can subdue the heavenly māra; in the preparation path, they can also suppress conceptually differentiated kleśas and become free of the kleśa-māra. In the fourth of the ten abodes, the abode of noble birth, because they abandon saṃsāra and transcend the three realms, they partially leave the death-māra. When entering the first ground, they partially leave portioned death, which is also called partially leaving the aggregate-māra; therefore, they are fearless.
