Ninth, vehicles mounted: Because one rides upon what is mounted and travels this path. The Buddhabhūmi-sūtra says: "Taking great śamatha and wondrous vipaśyanā as the vehicles mounted. Śamatha means samādhi (equal holding); vipaśyanā means prajñā (wisdom). Because śamatha and vipaśyanā are applied in equal balance, they are called the vehicles mounted. The path is the overall stage; within the stage, śamatha and vipaśyanā are individually called the vehicles mounted. The three bodies of the Buddha always mount these to enter the three Buddha lands; the bodhisattvas of the ten grounds mount these to enter the other-enjoyment land; the two vehicles prior to the grounds also mount these divisions of śamatha and vipaśyanā according to their capacity to enter the pure land. In the case of transformed defiled lands, both distracted and concentrated wisdom are taken together as the vehicles mounted; otherwise, there would be no way to be born in a Buddha land."
